Description

What we wear is a showcase of our individuality, but also a declaration of the place we wish to occupy in our society. It's a way to honor the craftsmanship of textile artisans. 'Tissé' is a symposium on intersectional textile design that will be held at the École de design de l’UQAM with the aim of highlighting artists working to shape fashion in a more inclusive way.

Far from being just beautiful clothes guided by the seasons, fashion is an expression of daily life, reflecting social, political, and economic references.

So ephemeral is the moment we now have with contact, that an image allows us to express ourselves more quickly and somewhat more massively. Fashion opens a door for us to speak or comment on what we agree with, what bothers us, and how, through what we wear, we unite behind a specific cause and ideology.

Over the years and the situations that surround us, many controversies have arisen, specifically uniting niches, cities, countries, or even the entire world. Through clothing, we generate movements of support, discontent, and defiance. It is our second voice, our barrier to say what we are sometimes forced to silence.

We have gathered some examples to discuss a little more about the power we have when we create a garment or express an idea. These are ways to touch society, and these supports lead to repercussions that can be used both for good and for evil.
